The University of Maryland Dental School announces the formation of the Dental School Auxiliary. The idea was developed by the Clinical Operations Board as an option for anyone who wants to be part of the Dental School, but chooses not to participate in teaching, patient care, or research efforts.  Members of the Dental School Auxiliary will provide valuable services in support of Dental School faculty and staff.

At present, there is a critical need to help direct patients and visitors as they find their way through the new Dental School building.  Auxiliary members will staff the reception desk in the beautiful atrium of the new Dental School.  They will work under the umbrella of the Clinical Operations Board, primarily for Dr. David George. “We see our Auxiliary as analogous to the volunteer organizations often seen in hospitals,” said Dr. George.  “We recognize that time is precious, and promise to make good use of the talents that our volunteers bring to us.  And we expect this to be a fun, personally rewarding experience,” he said.  As the Auxiliary grows, it will take on other projects.

Dean Christian Stohler is excited about the formation of the program.  “The Auxiliary is an idea of the Clinical Operations Board that I fully support.  It is wonderful to see this type of innovation, and I stand behind it 100 percent,” he said.

In addition to the camaraderie of members of the dental school community, Auxiliary members will receive free-parking, invitations to volunteer appreciation events, possible tax deductions for travel to and from the Dental School, and reduced-rate membership at the University Athletic Center. According to Dr. Warren Morganstein, Auxiliary Members who hold professional degrees in dentistry or dental hygiene will be recognized as Dean’s Faculty members, and will be eligible for study club memberships, in-service training, special social activities, and a University of Maryland Dental School e-mail account.

The program asks Auxiliary members to volunteer for at least one 4-hour session per week, and to make a minimum commitment of one year of service.  Sessions are available in the morning (8:30 am – 12:30 pm) and afternoon (12:30pm – 4:30 pm). Training sessions for volunteers are forming.

“If you like people and if want to serve your community and the Dental School, the Auxiliary would like to have you.  Bring a team, or bring yourself and we’ll help you build a team,” said Clinical Operations Board chair Dr. Harry Goodman.
